MARSHFIELD – A 21-year-old Scituate man was hospitalized Friday night
after his pickup truck went down an embankment on Summer Street and
tipped over, police said.
Jonathan Harght of 251 Beaver Dam Road, Scituate, wound up being
trapped in the truck for 45 minutes.
Harght was driving north on Summer Street near Prospect Street in
drizzling rain when his GMC pickup crossed the center line, went down
the embankment into a foot-deep stream and flipped onto the driver's
side, police and firefighters said.
When rescue personnel arrived, at about 7:50, Harght's left arm and
head were protruding from the open driver's-side window, the rest of
his body trapped in the cab, Capt. Shaun Robinson of the Marshfield
Fire Department said.
Harght was unconscious and chin-deep in the water, Robinson said. His
head was covered with blood from cuts.
Firefighters used airbags to lift the truck, then removed the the
windows and cut off the roof. They also chained the truck to a nearby
tree so it would not move.
About 30 minutes into the rescue, Harght regained consciousness,
Robinson said. At first he thought someone was with him in the truck.
Then he realized that he was alone.
Police said was not wearing a seat belt.
Police charged him with speeding, reckless operation to endanger and
failure to stay in marked lanes.
He was taken to South Shore Hospital. His injuries were not
life-threatening, but he had suffered hypothermia from being in the
water, and he complained of back injuries, firefighters said.
He was released from the hospital last night.
